Earlier last month, the gymnasium at Singapore International School Chiangmai (SISB Chiangmai) was transformed into an arena of whirring gears, blinking microcontrollers, and intense tactical focus as we hosted the regional VEX Robotics Championship. The event drew students from far and wide, uniting young coders and builders from schools across the region. Highlighting the tournament’s growing stature, several teams journeyed up from Greater Bangkok, making the long drive north specifically to put their engineering builds to the test on our home turf.

The Crucible of Competition

For those new to the VEX circuit, the tournament demands far more than quick reflexes on a game controller. Teams navigate a multifaceted challenge where they are paired into dynamic alliances with peers from other schools, requiring instant tactical alignment and collaborative field play. Each machine must also perform a nerve-wracking autonomous routine guided purely by pre-programmed sensors and algorithmic code, completely free of driver intervention. Outside the arena, students defend their iterative design notebooks and mechanical calculations before discerning panels of judges.

High Stakes and the Road to Bangkok

Advancing beyond the regional stage is intentionally demanding. With a packed field vying for top honors, berths to the National Championship in Bangkok—the official gateway to the global VEX World Championship—were reserved for only the strongest playoff alliances and premier judged award recipients.

It was an unforgettable milestone for our school community to see one of the host teams from SISB Chiangmai secure their place in the national finals. Our students earned their ticket to Bangkok through steady autonomous execution, sharp alliance coordination, and calm, methodical troubleshooting in the pit lane throughout the elimination rounds.

Regional Community and the Educator’s View

Beyond the match points, hosting this championship put northern Thailand’s collaborative educational spirit on full display. Initiatives of this caliber succeed thanks to strong partnerships across our local schools and through consortia like the Chiang Mai Circle of International Schools (CMCIS). While friendly rivalries are fierce on the competition mats, our community remains united in offering students premier platforms to stretch their capabilities.

As educators, witnessing students navigate high-pressure setbacks is the most rewarding part of the work. Robotics shifts students from passive technology consumers into agile, authentic problem solvers. When a gear slips with thirty seconds remaining or sensor data drifts on the field, theory takes a back seat to communication, resilience, and real-time engineering.

Gratitude and What’s Next

An event of this scale simply could not happen without the dedicated community behind it. A heartfelt thank you goes out to every student who participated, along with the tireless coaches, mentors, volunteer judges, and tournament officials who gave their time and expertise to make the day such a resounding success.
