STELLAR Literacy – Stories for young learners

STELLAR is a Singaporean approach to support students develop their literacy skills and a love of reading.

In a typical STELLAR lesson the teacher introduces the story and reads to the class from a Big Book.  The teacher then focused on the language items, structures and skills explicitly, including concepts of print, phonics and grammar. Schools create STELLAR booklets with worksheet and activities to support the learning of these skills.

Students typically spend 3 weeks focusing on one of these books and complete the worksheet booklet, before moving on to the next books.

Finally the teacher introduces follow up activities such as drama and art, based on the content of the story.

One of the great things about STELLAR is that it enables schools to select the books which they wish to focus on, so schools can choose books which they know will engage their students.

Here are a selection of the most popular STELLAR story books.
