Over 150 students from 22 international schools across Southeast Asia descended on the Thonburi Campus of Singapore International School Bangkok on 28th and 29th October, 2023, to join the first SISB Model United Nation Conference. The two conference was a great success with students enthusiastically engaging in lively debates, negotiations and resolutions.

Model United Nations (MUN) is an extra-curricular activity in which students simulate the United Nations and its various committees. Participants are assigned to represent a country or organization, and research and debate issues of international importance.

There are many different roles that people can play in MUN, including:

  • Delegate: Delegates represent their assigned country or organization in committee sessions. They research their country’s position on the issues being discussed, and deliver speeches, make points of order, and negotiate with other delegates in order to achieve their goals.
  • Chair: The Chair is responsible for overseeing the committee debates and ensuring that they proceed in an orderly and efficient manner. They also rule on points of order and help to facilitate consensus among the delegates.
  • The following are some of the documents that are typically created in a Model UN (MUN) conference:
  • Position Paper: A position paper is a one- or two-page document that outlines a country’s position on the issues being discussed in a committee session. It typically includes the country’s background on the issue, its past actions, its current policy, and its proposed solutions. Position papers are usually due before the conference begins, and they are circulated to all of the delegates in advance.
  • Working Paper: A working paper is a document that is introduced by a delegate or group of delegates during a committee session. It is typically used to propose a specific solution to a problem or to start a discussion on a new topic. Working papers can be circulated at any time during the committee session, and they are used as a basis for negotiation and debate.
  • Draft Resolution: A draft resolution is a document that is introduced by a delegate or group of delegates during a committee session. It is a formal proposal that outlines the committee’s position on an issue and the actions that it recommends. Draft resolutions are typically debated and amended by the delegates before they are put to a vote.
  • Resolution: A resolution is a document that has been adopted by a committee session. It outlines the committee’s position on an issue and the actions that it recommends. Resolutions are typically binding on the delegates, and they are used to guide the work of the committee and the United Nations.
